Now THAT'S a LCD display!

Image from: seamlessdisplay.com

This new monitor evidently is equivalent to three side-by-side 20.1" LCD panels incorporated into a seamless 50" diagonal display! One can imagine this will not be cheap to buy!

Riverboat Trip

This afternoon the school provided a riverboat ride on the Ohio River for all the incoming students (as well as staff and some of the returning students).

Lasting a couple of hours, the boat trip provided a great way to see the city from the river in addition to being a great time of fellowship.

Piracy doesn't pay in the end...

Software piracy is a bad idea on many levels! Here is just another reason not to pirate software:

Photos from last weekend

This is a poor photo (the flash, reflecting on the step where I set the camera, created noise in the photo), but is the only one I have of everyone from last weekend.

Safe arrival at GBS!

Last evening I arrived safely at GBS in Cincinnati, Ohio where I am attending as a senior in the Missions department. It was great to see some familiar faces on campus also!

I don't have Internet in my dorm room at the moment, so I am using the school library's computer for a few minutes in between orientation sessions to check e-mail, etc.

Returning Rainbow

On our way back from Waskaganish on Monday we were treated to this rainbow just as the sun was setting and a storm was brewing in the eastern sky...

Digital Photo Preservation

Since we take so many digital photos (40,000+ images so far between my brother and I), keeping the good ones safe is a concern. Evidently, digital media is not that durable and there are many woes waiting to befall those bytes of data we call "digital photographs". For those of us who capture and store digital photos, this article should be of interest:

10 Ways to Make Your Digital Photos Last Forever (external link)

Note: I don't agree with the suggestion of never deleting images; we delete on the cameras as we go, and also do an aggressive purge of photos once they're transferred to the computer.

(OK, "forever" is a stretch, but that's what the article's author chose as a title!)

Back to Waskaganish

This past weekend we had the opportunity to return to Waskaganish during their annual Gospel Jamboree. A number of guest speakers and musical groups were invited for four days of special meetings held at the Gathering Place (community center). We held a children's program during the evening services, and then did a short presentation during the Sunday morning service. It was great to see many of the children we first met at VBS last month, and also to make new friends as well.

In addition, we attended a couple of the services, during which we heard uplifting music, and powerful preaching delivered by Native people to the glory of Jesus name.
Once again, we were blessed to be among God's people in Waskaganish, working with them to declare His glory.

Plane Tickets!

Today I bought my plane ticket to Cincinnati, Ohio for August 23rd. Lord willing, I plan to attend GBS this fall to complete the final year of my BA in Intercultural Studies.

Antarctica: Where clouds are an oddity!

"Nacreous clouds form when the fading light at sunset passes through tiny ice crystals blown along by a strong jet of stratospheric air.

The clouds form only in polar latitudes and at extremely cold temperatures.

"Our weather balloon measured temperatures down to minus 87 degrees Celsius [minus 125 degrees Fahrenheit] in the vicinity of the cloud layer," said Baker on the Web site of the Australian Antarctic Division, a bureau of Australia's environmental department.
"That's about as cold as the lowest temperatures ever recorded on the surface of the Earth.

Amazingly, the winds at this height were blowing at nearly 230 kilometers [143 miles] per hour." "

Transmission Fluid & Filter

Today after work I set to work on replacing the transmission oil & filter in my Mom's car. With the advice of our local mechanic and my uncle the plans were put in place.

A little background: on our trip to Waskaganish a few weeks ago the "Service Engine Soon" came on during the last 100kms of the trip up there. However, on the trip home the light went out and didn't reappear...until our return from Quebec last weekend. Yesterday Mom went to the garage and the mechanic read the error code: which turned out to be a slipping transmission error.

We borrowed ramps and I crawled under the car to begin removing the 15 or so bolts which held on the transmission pan. After removing the pan, gasket, and filter, we cleaned out the pan thoroughly. I then installed the new filter and gasket before replacing the pan. Finally, we poured in 5 containers of new transmission fluid, as well as a bottle of stop leak.

Hopefully this will correct the problem!

New Post Falls

Last Saturday afternoon we drove west to Smooth Rock Falls, and then turned north to Fraserdale, the site of a Ontario Power hydro-electric dam. Friends had told us about some amazing water falls, and we were given approximate directions. However, upon reaching Fraserdale we asked a couple out with their dogs for further directions. They kindly offered to guide us to the falls, for which we were thankful! Upon reaching the falls, we were astounded by the magnatude of the drop into the canyon! Hiking first to the top of the falls, Cameron took this picture. Then, we hiked to the lower side of the falls, to get the perspective from below. By that night we had not only taken some great pictures, but also had made new friends!
